- Although Mario is a plumber, but never actually did any plumbing, instead, he saved princesses, played tennis and baseball, and went kart racing.
- Mario's original name was Mr. Video, with the intention that he would appear in all of Shigero Miyamoto's games, but this was changed during Donkey Kong's conceptual stage to Jumpman.
- According to a widely circulated story, during localization of Donkey Kong for North American audiences, Nintendo of America's warehouse landlord Mario Segale confronted his then-president Minoru Arakawa, demanding back rent. Following a heated argument in which the Nintendo employees eventually convinced Segale he would be paid, they opted to name the character in the game Mario after him.
